Educational concept for schools
Prohibited car racing should also be a topic in the classroom. The NRW police have therefore developed an exciting and high-quality teaching concept that can be integrated into traffic accident prevention work at secondary level 1 (year 10) and secondary level 2/upper school.

The prevention concept can have the most meaningful effect when young people can be emotionally and intellectually involved in the process of elaboration and decision-making.

The educational concept guides the pupils to decide for themselves whether a fictitious perpetrator is guilty or not guilty of murder as a result of a motor vehicle race. With a short film in documentary style, the pupils get to know the perpetrator and experience the respective accident.

The interactive film with its two endings forms the framework of the educational teaching concept.

This is based on the play "Terror" by Ferdinand von Schirach, in which the viewers act as jurors and have to decide the guilt or innocence of the perpetrator at the end of the play.

This is intended to reduce the distance to the topic, but also to tie in with their own lives. The division into a core film and two possible decision films encourages pupils to engage with the topic themselves and not just depict a "finished story". The pupils actively engage with the fate of all those involved in the forbidden race and recognize the gravity of the crime.

The three-minute main film is shown at the beginning of the short sequence. It introduces the pupils to the topic of forbidden races and shows them the dangers associated with them in an emotional way. The film ends with a brief account of the accident. The pupils are not initially told what happens next for the perpetrator and the victims. They can actively participate in the further plot of the film as part of the lesson series and decide on the guilt or innocence of the driver. Depending on the decision of the group of pupils at the end of the sequence, one of the respective ends of the film is shown. At the end of the lesson sequence, the pupils act as jurors in a role play in the form of a court hearing and have to critically assess the driver's actions. Acquiring the ability to make a judgment is therefore the focus of the planned five lessons of 45 minutes each.

The students' decision is accompanied by the teachers over several lessons. A wide range of subjects (e.g. physics, mathematics, ethics) can be integrated.

Depending on the group's decision, they can watch the corresponding decision film.

The aim is for each of the young adults to realize that, in addition to their own behaviour, they also have an influence on the driver's behaviour as a passenger. Prohibited motor vehicle racing can have a lasting negative impact on more than just one life.

The educational units also aim to reduce overconfidence, competitive thinking and aggressive behavior in road traffic. Furthermore, the aim is to strengthen the self-esteem of fellow drivers and make them aware of their ability to influence the behavior of others. They must be put in a position to defend themselves against social pressure and learn about alternative courses of action.

The success of the prevention concept depends largely on the immediacy and intensive engagement with the main film. This should result in a judgment, which then leads to one of the decision films. If the films were known to the target group in advance, this would have a significant impact on the benefits and success of the campaign.

For this reason, only the school as an institution or a responsible teacher can request the film from the NRW Ministry of Education. Publication on the Internet is therefore ruled out for the reasons outlined above.
