As part of the cross-state road safety campaign "sicher.mobil.leben - Radfahrende im Blick", the Lippe district police authority is devoting special attention to cycling on May 5, 2021. Throughout the district, the Lippe police are raising awareness of the special requirements relating to cycling with increased checks and prevention work.

Cyclists are particularly at risk in road traffic, and the lack of a crumple zone can lead to serious injuries in accidents. The responsibility to protect people on bicycles, pedelecs or e-bikes does not just lie with them. All road users can contribute to making Lippe's roads safer for two-wheeled enthusiasts.

Due to the pandemic, a prevention event with many people on the day of action is unfortunately not possible, which is why the road safety advisory service of the Lippe police has compiled information on special dangers for cyclists and helpful tips on road safety in text and pictures:

Danger 1: Dooring

Carelessly opening a car door to get out of a car parked at the side of the road can have serious consequences for cyclists. They often have no chance of avoiding the suddenly opening doors. Doors should therefore always be opened carefully on both the driver's and passenger's side after looking over your shoulder. These accidents can be avoided by using the Dutch grip, i.e. opening the driver's door with the right hand or the passenger door with the left hand.

Danger 2: Blind spot

Careful when changing direction! Caution and consideration should be understood literally when it comes to turning safely. Turning left requires particularly careful behavior from cyclists. When vehicles are turning right, the blind spot in particular poses incalculable dangers for cyclists. Motorized road users have a particular duty here: don't forget to look over your shoulder before turning! Cyclists are best advised to stay behind vehicles that want to turn right.

Danger 3: Using the cycle path against the direction of travel

Accidents happen time and again because the cycle path is used against the direction of travel. Other road users do not expect cyclists coming from the right, which can lead to serious collisions.

Danger 4: Distraction & lack of protection

Focus on traffic! Whether in a car, on a bike or on foot: all your senses are needed in road traffic. Any distraction increases the risk of accidents and endangers you and others. So keep your hands off your cell phone and your eyes on the road.

Despite all precautionary measures, accidents cannot be completely ruled out. People make mistakes - even in road traffic. We therefore appeal to cyclists: Protect your head and wear a helmet! Wearing a cycle helmet does not prevent accidents, but it reduces the consequences of accidents and protects the control center of your body.

Danger 5: Disregarding the cycle lane

Pay attention to protection zones! Cycle lanes may not be used for parking or stopping. Swerving into the hard shoulder is permitted if cyclists cannot be endangered.

No sensible person drives a car without training. Why shouldn't cyclists also benefit from this? Take part in cycle and pedelec training courses so that you can ride safely on the road. These are offered by various organizations such as the police.

Our seminars are currently suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. As soon as we are able to resume the courses, you will find the dates here on our website and in the local press.
